A Brief Overview Of The Yountville Wine Region In Napa Valley

Napa Valley is a popular tourist attraction in California. There are several different reasons many people decide to spend their vacation enjoying the sights and wineries. Among them is the shopping in Yountville. When you are planning your vacation to the Napa Valley wineries, you should consider planning your lodging in Yountville.

In Yountville you will not be subjected to the extreme temperatures and drastic heat. Generally this area tends to be a bit cooler and breezier, which is a great change for California. The wineries seem to do well in the cooler temperatures. The Cabernet Sauvignon wine grapes, Syrah, Zinfandel and Merlot grapes also seem to do great in these temperatures. The ground is perfect for planting and harvesting the grapes that will be used for wine.

The terrain in Yountville is not only ideal for growing some of the best wine grapes in California, but it also ideal for tourists as well. You will have the opportunity to experience the long delightful mornings and warm afternoons as you walk along the scenic areas that offer geological wonders. Wonders that can only be found in this area.

On the southern side of the northern boarder is Oakville, known as the Oak Knoll District. The Yountville Mount is located just north of town, and actually is nothing more than a large hill. However, it provides more than adequate protection for producing prime wine grapes. The fog is trapped by the Mounts as it begins to slowly creep in from the San Pablo Bay area. The majority of the vineyards in Yountville thrive on the cool mist that perfectly mixes with the warm air creating an ideal growing place for wine grapes.

This historic location of wineries is traceable back to over 150 years. In 1836, 11,000 acres were granted to George Calvert Yount. This large acreage was then called Caymus Ranchero. A large portion of the Valley floor that runs between Yountville and St. Helena was part of the acreage allotted to Mr. Yount. Over time the land that belonged to Mr. Yount under went some changes and was perfected for growing wine grapes. At that time the first winery was planted by Mr. Yount. In 1850, a small part of the land was sold by Mr. Yount to Mr. Charles Hopper.

Several years after this land transferred ownership a town was created on it. When the town was first constructed it was known by the name Sebastopol. There were issues with the original name because a neighboring county had a location with the same name. Later, in 1867 it the name was changed to Yountville after Mr. Yount passed away.
